Build a steady rhythm

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Keep the controls in easy reach.

Step by step

  1. Read the mate objective.
  2. Choose a legal attacking move.
  3. The defender replies automatically where another move is required.
  4. Finish the forced mating line.

Controls

Select pieces and targets; use Hint or New puzzle. Use the control method described here for this activity. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

A legal check is wrong when it permits escape from the required mate. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Take a moment to compare.

Watch out for this

The objective is forced mate, not merely checking the king. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
