How to play Peg Solitaire

Start Peg Solitaire by looking at the playing area and its controls. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Check the rule that explains your first action. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

A useful comparison

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Choose a deliberate next step.

Watch out for this

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
