How to play Reversi

Make Reversi your next activity in the game library. When neither player has a legal move, the player with more discs on the board wins; equal totals are a draw. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

A useful comparison

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

When neither player has a legal move, the player with more discs on the board wins; equal totals are a draw. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. The example below illustrates a decision.

Step by step

  1. Black moves first. Highlighted cells show legal placements.
  2. Place a disc to trap one or more opponent discs in a straight line.
  3. Every trapped line from that placement is flipped.
  4. If a player has no legal move, the turn automatically passes.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

A useful example

Black–white–empty can become black–black–black when Black plays in the empty square. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Watch out for this

A placement must flip at least one opposing disc; simply placing beside your own discs is not enough. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
