How to play Tic-Tac-Toe

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Tic-Tac-Toe. Complete a row, column or diagonal of three marks. If the board fills without a line, the round is a draw. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Make your first input carefully and watch the result. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Make the controls familiar

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Complete a row, column or diagonal of three marks. If the board fills without a line, the round is a draw. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Check the rules when you are unsure.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 places a cross in an empty cell.
  2. Player 2 places a circle in another empty cell.
  3. Take turns, watching both your winning opportunities and the opponent’s threats.
  4. The board stops accepting moves when a player wins or the game is drawn.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A useful example

Two crosses in the top row threaten a win in the remaining top-row cell. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Consider the next action carefully.

Watch out for this

You cannot replace a mark that is already on the board. Check the rule before repeating the action. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
